G'Day!

I’m Wally,  a retired geologist with a lifelong love of Australia’s landscapes and the long, slow stories they tell.

I’ve spent most of my life thinking about rocks, which may sound niche, but it turns out they have quite a lot to say if you stop long enough to listen.

After many years working in geology, I realised that some of the most rewarding conversations I’ve had about the land didn’t happen in offices or lecture rooms, but out on a walk, stopping to look at a rock, a cliff face, or a valley, and asking the deceptively simple question: how did this come to be? (The answer is usually “over a very long time”.)

Walks with Wally grew out of that idea.

Each walk I lead is carefully planned around a particular place, chosen not only for its beauty, but for its geological personality. Australia is an ancient continent, and beneath our feet are layers of history that go back hundreds of millions of years.
I enjoy helping people piece those layers together -  without jargon, without exams, and without assuming anyone else finds rocks quite as fascinating as I do.

These are relaxed, steady-paced walks. We stop often. Sometimes because someone asks a question, and sometimes because an outcrop simply demands our attention.
We follow tangents, read the landscape, and take the time to look a little closer at what’s been hiding in plain sight.

If you enjoy walking, learning, or simply understanding why a place looks the way it does, I’d be delighted if you joined me. I won’t take anyone for granite but I do promise you’ll come away with a deeper appreciation of the ground beneath your feet, solid as it may seem.

Mountain And Clouds

1

Sandstone & Deep Time – Blue Mountains

A relaxed walk through classic Blue Mountains country, where layered sandstone cliffs, valleys, and escarpments reveal a story hundreds of millions of years in the making. We’ll talk about how these landscapes formed, why they look the way they do today, and what erosion, rivers, and time have carved into the plateau.

2

Cliffs, Coal & Coast – Royal National Park

This coastal journey explores dramatic cliffs, rock platforms, and headlands shaped by ancient environments and more recent geological processes. Along the way we’ll look at sedimentary layers, discuss Australia’s coal history, and connect the rocks beneath our feet to the wider story of the continent.

3

Rivers at Work – Hawkesbury River

A walk focused on the power of water. We’ll explore how rivers cut valleys, transport sediment, and quietly reshape the land over immense spans of time. This walk is about seeing movement and change in what often feels like a static landscape.

Rocky Landscape Scene

4

Basalt, Volcanoes & Fertile Ground – Northern Rivers

In this region, ancient volcanic activity has left behind rich soils and distinctive landforms. We’ll look at basalt flows, talk about long-extinct volcanoes, and explore how geology directly influences ecosystems, agriculture, and settlement.

5

Rock Platforms & Rising Seas – Central Coast

A coastal walk examining rock platforms, headlands, and evidence of changing sea levels. We’ll discuss how coastlines evolve, what rock types tell us about past environments, and why Australia’s shores look the way they do today.

6

Reading the Landscape (Custom Walks)

I also offer tailored walks for community groups, walking clubs, or private groups, designed around a specific location or geological theme. If there’s a place you’re curious about, chances are it has a story worth stopping for.
